Your vehicle can overheat for a number of reasons: because it's being overworked, the heat outside, and more.  However, having this situation present itself is less than ideal. For that reason, this post will go over a few tips on what to do if this happens to you.

What to Do if Your Car Overheats

Take Preventive Measures

If you know that your vehicle is prone to overheating, remember to keep some coolant or water nearby in case it needs it. Just know that water isn't a permanent fix.

Act Fast!

If your vehicle is beginning to heat up, turn off your AC and roll your windows down immediately to release some of the pressure on the engine. If this doesn't help, you can try blasting on the heater.

Let Your Engine Rest

If you can't pull over right away, park your car if possible or put it in "Neutral". Even going at a slow but steady pace can be really helpful when trying to let your engine cool down.

Re-fill the Reservoir

Pull over as soon as you can and turn off your vehicle. Pop the hood open to let air reach the engine. After you've let it cool for about half an hour, check the reservoir to see if it's empty. If it is, use the water or coolant to re-fill it.

Take It to a Reliable Mechanic

Finally, you should take your vehicle to a reliable mechanic that can evaluate its condition, let you know why it overheated, and provide specific tips on how to keep that from happening again.
